Doctorate (1971) and Habilitation à Diriger des Recherches (1990 with Professor O.C. Zienkiewicz as ''foreign reviewer'') from University Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, is currently, since 1992, Professor, Chair of Mechanics, at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers (CNAM) in Paris where he is the Director of the Structural Mechanics and Coupled Systems Laboratory. He is also a consultant at the Office National d'Etudes et de Recherches Aérospatiales (ONERA) where before joining academia, he carried on his career at ONERA since 1970, Head of the Computational Structural Mechanics and Coupled Systems Division (1982-1991) and Scientific Deputy (1991-1992).

He serves in the editorial board of several international journals and he co-organized numerous international conferences, among them, several ASME (serving as a member since 12 years) and IACM (International Association for Computational Mechanics) mini-symposiums. He served as the first President of the French of Computational Structural Mechanics Association CSMA of IACM (1987-1996) and acts as international representative of CSMA in IACM and serves also in the French GAMNI association contributing, with others, in the appropriate connections between mechanical and numerical analysis groups in France. Within IACM, he serves as a member of the general council and acts as corresponding member in the Executive Committee.

He was the Chairman of the International Conference on Adaptive Systems and Technology (ICAST'99) in Paris, October 11-13, 1999, concerning Smart Structures activities.

He has strong links with Industries and European Aerospace Research Centers , for instance he was chairman of a GARTEUR (Group for Research and Technology in EURope) Action Group on Updating Methods between Computations and Tests for Vibrations Problems, serving now as a Member of the Group of Responsables of GARTEUR/Materials and Structures.

He got an award in mechanics from the French Academy of Sciences for his overall works on Mechanical and Numerical Modeling of Coupled Fluid Structure Problems (1989).

He has been elected member of the National Academy of Engineering of Brazil (1994) and member of the French National Aeronautics and Space Academy, ANAE (2001) and promoted as Officier dans l'Ordre des Palmes Académiques (2001).

He got an IACM (International Association for Computational Mechanics) Fellow Award in 1998.

His major scientific interest concerns Mechanical and Computational Modeling of Fluid-Structure Systems, Structural Acoustics and Vibration (Vibroacoustics), Parametric Updating and Inverse Problems, Intelligent/Smart Structures Adaptive Systems Modeling for Hybrid Passive/Active Control of structural and fluid/structure vibroacoustics problems.

He is the co-author of 80 papers, co-editor of 5 books (4 in French and 1 in English), co-author of 3 books (1 in French and 2 in English on Vibrations of Fluid-Structure Systems - hydroelasticity, sloshing, structural-acoustics).

Books written (in collaboration):

  1. Interactions Fluides-Structures, Coll. P.G. Ciarlet and J.L. Lions, Masson, 1992.
  2. Fluid-Structure Interaction, Wiley, 1995, an english revised and updated version.
  3. Structural-Acoustics and Vibration, Academic Press, 1998.

Guest co-editor of international journals special issues:

  1. (with O.C. Zienkiewicz) :Special Issue of the International Journal for Numerical Methods in Engineering on Composites.
  2. (with C.A. Felippa) :''Advances in Computational Methods for Fluid-Structure Interaction and Coupled Problems'', Computer Methods in Applied Mechanics and Engineering Journal, 190, 2001.
